I'm a brand new 12" iBook owner, and I just thought I'd say hello, you can expect me to be asking some pretty silly questions

im on the same boat. i just bought mine this morning and i love it.
just a question though. i'm not sure if the rectangle shaped object on the bottom of the ibook with green led lights is the battery, but is it just mine, or is it slightly loose? i can feel mine slightly loose and im not sure if its supposed to be like that, or really tightly shut.

That is the battery, it's on the bottom, and has the little gray button that makes the green LEDs light up... (that's to show you how much battery is left), mine feels a little loose too.

The ill-fitting battery is a very common complaint about iBooks. If it's broken, you may get it replaced under warranty but I think we're just expected to live with the less-than-perfect fit.

Congrats!
... and a few rules.
If you have a question, open a thread. Don't use someone elses thread to make it yours.
Read the manual. If you have a question, people spend their time to think and answer. The iBook comes with a description and there you find the answer to your question. Don't ask such obvious things and don't ask because you are too lazy to research for yourself - please.

So.... where in the manual does it say that the battery is loose? Please show me, because I cant find it in the manual. And what exactly did I ask that was SO OBVIOUS to you? I did say that it was the battery. I wasn't sure, but I did say it was.
So - PLEASE - think before you make a comment like that to me because obviously you're the one who has the problem - PLEASE.

TimothyJay, he was meaning when you were asking where the battery was, not the comment on the loose battery.

Timothy, don't sweat it. Even the person opening the thread was interested in your question (and has a loose battery).
Batteries can be loose but unless it feels like it's going to fall out or results in all four feet not able to sit on the desk at the same time, it's probably nothing to worry about.
Try reseating your battery. Shut down your iBook. Turn it upside down on a soft surface. Turn the locking screw to open the battery lock and then remove the battery. Don't drop it (which is why you're holding it upside down). Put the battery back in gently and turn the locking screen. If this doesn't solve it, this isn't the worst problem you could have. Imagine some dead pixels in the middle of your screen. That would be worse. (Just trying to put it in perspective.)
If the computer won't sit flat, take it back. It should sit flat on all 4 feet and that is important.
Congratulations on your new iBook!

yip, my battery's in a bit crooked, sitting a little lower on the left. seems to be like that in all ibooks. it shouldn't matter, just don't point it out to windows users who are looking for something to hassle
as for the poster above who suggested looking at the manual before asking questions - the ibook has a manual? i saw a pamphlet in the box, but...
sminch
ps - just yanking your chain, timothyjay! for the new guys, the search on macnn does turn up loads of helpful stuff cos trust me, most questions have done the rounds once a month for as long as i've been sifting around here. and if you can't find your answer in the archives the amount of random stuff these guys know is sometimes a little scary. enjoy your new ibooks!

I'm considering picking up an 12" iBook, but with all the rumors of a new one just on the horizon, I'm holding off for a few more weeks. The current version has been out for a little while.

I'm not in a hurry, so I'll just hold off for now. I'm still considering a PowerBook 12"
