Hi All

My Pismo (running 10.3.4 with 1GB RAM) has slowed to a crawl. I get a beachball just about everything I do and it can take ten seconds to switch between apps.

I run System Optimizer weekly (which repairs permissions and clears system/application cache) but it hasn't helped.

My 60GB hard drive is about eighteen months old and has about 7GB free. I do have several thousand mp3s. (iTunes is especially slow.)

Any thoughts how I can get it back to its former snappiness?

First of all, you have a Pismo. What kind of performance are you expecting with a 5 year old machine? Second, why are you only at 10.3.4? Update. That could be part of your problem. As for iTunes, with a slow machine and tons of MP3's, I wouldn't be surprised if it is performing slowly. Repair permissions and update the OS. There's not much else you can do.

iDVD slowed to a crawl with my 17" Powerbook. I created a different username after trying all I knew to do. iDVD worked fine after that but only under the new username. This lets me know it is still a software problem, but I still have not figured out how to solve it under the old username.

I had the chance to babysit a 1 ghz Aluminum Powerbook whose owner, like most novices, had decided to stay with the stock 256mb of ram. My Pismo, with 768mb and a 5400rpm hard drive, was just as snappy in application launches and general responsiveness. Relative to what the original poster was used to getting on his Pismo, there's obviously something going wrong at the system level.
To the OP, try running Applejack to help sort out your problem.

To be clear, my pismo is slow relative to its earlier performance (1GB RAM and an upgraded 7200 rpm hard drive). I don't expect it to keep up with a contemporary powerbook, just the performance I had become used to.

Thanks for the Applejack tip gzeus.

(edited: upgraded HD is 7200 rpm )
