I am hearing this faint sound in my 2 day old PowerBook, that seems to be coming from the fans or may be the hard drive whenever I am using the Expose'. It also comes when I am switching between two application windows. It is just a brief sound that always comes when I am switching between windows of two different applications or when I am using expose'. I have heard the same sound but much louder in an older 17" PB. Does anybody know what these sounds are? They are not really bothersome, but I have no idea what it is!
_Thanks.

"Faint sound" and "brief sound" doesn't tell us much. Can you describe it any better? Is it a whine, a high pitched noise, a click, a pop, a fart, what?

Well, its a low pitched mechanical whine (definitely hardware) and happens for the fraction of second it takes for the OS to switch to the new window, or do the Expose' effect. Sounds almost like little rusty gears creaking. But it is very faint. Thats the best description I can give!
Actually I just tried hearing for it on my iBook G4 and it does it too (very faint, you have to put your ear to the keyboard's function keys to reallyhear it). I am guessing all laptops do it.
Any ideas?
Thanks

There have been a lot of posts about PB noise, even on the Apple forum. It happens on my 1.5Ghz when running at full CPU frequency (ie. setting 'Highest' in energy saver preference pane). Sometimes during graphical intense processing a high pitched whine can be heard, fortunately not during games. I just ignore it because it tends to blend in with the HD noise. You could try setting energy saver to 'Automatic' if you want.

i'd bet money its the video card. scroll a really long web page and see if you can get the sound to repeat.

pc suffer the same fate. i had a rev b 15" a long time ago and it was annoying.

glad to see the managed to reduce the level of that annoying sound.

Thanks!
The noise is very faint again, and I have noticed it ONLY when I am doing the above things. Scrolling seems fine. I heard it on a couple of other people's iBook as well, if I glued my ear to the keyboard.
Anyway, still debating whether I should let Apple look at it.
