I just purchased a PowerBook 15" last week. Is it bad for the PowerBook to be in a bookbag without any other type of protection (case, cushion)? How much jostling can it take? Would you recommend a laptop case or a skin tight cover with the bookbag?

Here's my system, which I find to work flawlessly:
First, I bought this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...c&n=507846
It'll hold all your books, and has a special padded compartment for your laptop.
The compartment is made for a 17" laptop, but I was weary about letting my PB jostle around, so I bought this:
http://www.sfbags.com/products/sleev...leevecases.htm
I got the verticle version. The PowerBook fits perfectly in it, and doesn't budge. The Waterfield case then fits perfectly in the Targus laptop compartment, and even when the backback has like 5 textbooks in it, pounding into the laptop, it doesn't get harmed at all. Nothing happens when I plop the backpack down, either. I haven't gotten any dings or dents, because it's just such a perfect solution .
Plus, if I don't want to bring my backpack somewhere, I ordered the extra arm-strap for my Waterfield case (which I keep attached to it), and I can just pull it out of the backpack and carry it separately.
By the way, to quickly access to my PowerBook, I simply open my backpack, unstrap a tiny velcro piece, and open the Waterfield case (more velcro). I can then just pull the PowerBook out, leaving the Waterfield case in the backpack. It takes under ten seconds .
I highly recommend this combination solution, and it'll cost you just a little over $100. The safety of your computer will be ensured, and the convenience factor doesn't hurt.
The *only* issue is that people may sometimes comment that your backpack is very large . It stores lots of books, though .

If yours is a 12" PowerBook the Vyper Booq is too big. It snugly fits a 12" iBook, but leaves and all round space of about 1cm when the 12" PowerBook is inside. Which means it can easily slide around.
I recommend the Shinza Zero Shock sleeve.

hey bleee, have you tried the vyper or any other booq product? I was thinking about buying either a sleeve or a bag from them, they look really nice.

I've got a vyper sleeve with my new 12" PowerBook - yes it is just a little bit big, but you can put in a bit of padding or something to get around that, and it's a very nice case overall.

If you have spent in the $2000 range on a new powerbook, it's defintiely worth it to spend a little on some kind of protective case. Even if you bought a used one for much less, it's still worth it. But you may have the materials already: I custom built a compartment for my 17-inch into my backpack using an existing sleeve from a carrying bag, and a hard but light file case around it. Works great!

Sorry for the late reply...
Yes I own both the vyper XS and the mambo XS. The vyper sleeve is great it fits the 12 inch perfectly and leaves a bit of space for a buffer I guess you could call it the material is very sturdy you can't sit on it but its good enough to be able to pack with luggage. The mambo XS is good for carrying the 12 inch + power adapter some pens a small book, and adapters/cords. My only complain is that the rings you clip the bag strap onto are secured to the bag by an elastic material covered by a fabric which to me isn't very strong but it has yet to break. The movable padding on the straps is an annoyance when your on the bus sitting down with your bag on the padding tends to slide behind you back and you have to pull it forward when you get off the bus in order to have it back on your shoulder. There is a thick padding on the back of the bag which is nice.
The bag has alot of zippers 8 in total.
The bag has 2 main compartment you can see from the pics on the website. With this bag you have to remember that when your zipping the compartments to hold the flap if you zipp all the way down to open the compartment if the bag is up right all the materials in compartment tend to spill out.

Hey guys,
I just purchased a Max Protect Sleeve to go into my Terminal bag from DAKINE. Dakine makes really great bags I couldn't be happier with this setup.
