My 1ghz titanium got the logic board replaced a couple months ago, but when it got back the fan was forever on. I sent it back, they replaced the logic board, but since I've gotten it back it's been roughly the same.

Here's what I am wondering:
  1. If you have a titanium powerbook, which one do you have and are you experiencing this?
  2. If you have any other powerbook, does the fan go on often?

I've seen complaints in the apple forums for all models. When the logic board in this machine was replaced the first time, it was after it crashed due to, as they later told me, a "burned logic board." This would lead me to think that they realized there was a problem and decided to tweak the fans, but none of the reps mentioned it. It also wouldn't account for why I see some complaints with newer powerbooks.

What makes it even more noticable is that I have a g3 ibook here and the fan on that almost never comes on. I'm seriously on the verge of buying a g4 ibook as my main machine because of this, but I really like the 15" screen.

It depends what tasks you do on the computer, if your CPU is 100% busy then the whole fans will be on.
If you are just typing in MS word then you could run you CPU in reduce speed mode, if your fans work all the time probably you have to install CHUD from Developer Tools and look up in system preferences panel Hardware and turn on the CPU power nap.

I have this fan problem as well. My problem started as well after the third replacement of some parts. due to the fact that I boughtin mycomputer whilst living in the UsA and now being stationed in New Zealand the Apple Australasia lady refused to replace the computer altough Apple USA told me they approved of it.

(Up to today Apple has spent over USD3000 on labor and parts)

Nowadays even when I am only am only browsing and downloading something from a website my fan starts. The temperature of my processor is mot of the time around 59-61 degrees Celcius. When I start to play a dvd my fan is on the whole time.

I wish I had taken Apple Care n my computer as in that case I would have it sent back every time until the annoying fan issue is no longer exsisting.

Well, browsing is not that simple task, specially if you use Firefox and site contains a lot of flash then FireFox will burn in hell your computer. I'm not kidding. Safari loads CPU less with flash animation, but still a lot. I recommend to check if you have a Hardware preference panel and check CPU nap and set CPU performance in Energy Saver to Reduce this way fans shouldn't on too much if you just do simple tasks.

Thanks, beachmark, that sounds a lot like my situation. I'm guessing by the fact that you can check the temp that it's an aluminum powerbook.

I've had this machine for over 2 years and the fan wouldn't come on high when browsing the web, writing code or doing anything else that didn't tax it too much. I've also heard from folks with aluminum powerbooks that their fans rarely come on. Doing a search here I see there are a lot of folks with new aluminums that say they are totally silent. At the same time, I noticed in the apple forums that some folks are complaining that their aluminum powerbooks have the fans running all the time.

I know that when my powerbook came out (the last model of titaniums), a lot of people were having problems with noisy fans going on all the time. I didn't have any such problem until I had to send it in at the beginning of the year. Obviously, there are a lot of mixed messages going around about what the situation with the fans really is.

macdaemon, you didn't really answer the question, but for your second post it seems that the fan in your powerbook comes on with relatively light usage, as well. Which model is it and ~ what's the processor @ for how long before the fan comes one?

I've had a very difficult time finding solid, factual information on this.
