i just turned my ibook on (out of standard waentee but in the extended programme) and had the usual grey screen with lines. this i have come to know as a logic board failure. after a restart it is now ok. however i want to prepare for the worst. as this is the third time this has happened should i just ask for a replacement?

Yes, most definitely, ask for a replacement. Was there ever a question in your mind? Just remember to be firm and polite, and if you encounter problems, keep politely insisting on talking to the next level service rep.

Hope you are luckier (more convincing?) than me and a whole lot of other people, but they won't do it before the 4th failure..... You might get a combo drive upgrade though.
