I gave my iBook G4 for repair at the Apple store in London (most probably to change the logic board because of video issue).

I've been told the repair would take 2 weeks, but I've been waiting for 1.5 month, and they are still waiting for some parts (I guess it's the logic board).

The iBook is still under warranty. It there anything I can do? can I ask for a new iBook? What do you think?

From what Apple told me on the phone they only give you a new iBook if you have to send the same one 4 times for the logic board problem. After that they will give you a new iBook. I guess you'll just have to wait.

The point is that this is a known issue, and they can't even fix it in a couple of weeks. I have to wait for months to have my iBook fixed just because Apple repair service sucks? How come they don't have logic boards to replace it ? My point is that if they can't fix it, they should offer a replacement. I paid for my iBook and I can't use it

Took them a day to fix and ship mine back to me. I guess maybe because I live in the States that helps. But your right it shouldn't take that long to fix it.

Pat, this is the problem with Apple no longer collecting and fixing ibooks in the UK (unlike the US). The "channel" AKA AASPs need to do the repairs - after finding a friendly AASP, my repair "only" took 3 weeks, with a 1 week turnaround on the spares - so the spare boards are not the problem.

I suspect that your repairer may not be being wholly candid with you.

From what i've been told, Apple is doing the repair on site at the apple store. The issue is Apple and Apple only.

sounds like it's time to call applecare and politely and firmly work your way through complaints that this is unacceptable, unprofessional, etc. Ask who you can call to get a speedy and immediate resolution, etc.

Your iBook is probably in REA )Repair Extension Authorzation). All it is a a replacement of the logic board. I have seen turnaround from resellers in 5 business days from Maui. If this it at an Apple reseller and they are doing the repairs "in-house" for REA, they are not abiding by Apple's policy to send that unit in directly for REA. No reseller is allowed to perform REA repairs on the iBook REA program. I would check that first. If they are trying to do it inhouse I would get it back and call apple and send it in direct.

Aloha.

I called Apple today, and they told me I have to go back to the Apple Store and give the iBook for repair again. See you in 2 months from now, when I get the iBook back...

Sorry to hear that, when my logic board failed I was lucky and my computer was returned to me two days after sending it off. Best of luck.

Since your second logic board is functional (just has other problems) they should let you keep the iBook to use until a new logic board comes in. Maybe the Apple Store would be nice enough to let you do this in the meantime, I would ask.

I think that's a logical request.

You handed it in at Regent Street?

Whoops.
Regent Street has HUGE delays on all repairs (except those who spend £79/year on ProCare who get it done in a week) due to the sheer volume. Regent Street handles ALL repairs on-site, for the whole of the UK. That's why it's taking so long.

Ring up, or go in, and complain. Don't take no for an answer. A month and a half for a repair is totally unacceptable.

Yes I went to Regent Street. They indeed do the repair on site, but I believe it took so long because they had to wait for a new logic board to come from the US. Unfortunately, I cannot keep the iBook with me until they receive the logic board, because it also has an audio issue (crackling sounds) when using airport. This issue was NOT fixed on top of the new faulty logic board.

I'm going back to Regent Street tomorrow. I'll keep you informed.

I have had a similar ordeal..

I'm in the last year of my graphic design degree and my ibook for three years - it has become part of me. At christmas my logic board decided to fail and I have not been able to use my ibook since - it has been having a lovely 4 month holiday in Regent Street and consequetly buggered up my degree. Oh how I love apple so!

So the logic board failed in january and I took it to be repaired. Mine too took a month and a half before i heard from them. So I travelled back from Bath where i'm at uni to collect it. The dear little computer lasted a whole two days before it died again. So, back it went. This time the bemused looking genius's said they would give it a complete overhaul and sort out the wires that were making the screen dodgy too.

This time it took about a month to fix but at least I could see from the website that they were waiting for parts this time. Also they promised me that they would put it on priority as it had only just been repaired.

I picked it up last week and wasnt very convinced as the lines were still appearing on the screen when i moved the monitor. However, they convinced me it had passed all its tests. Low and behold, i turned it on today to be greeted with a blank screen. So it has broken for the third time and I have not had it working for practically the entire final year of my Mac based degree.

Does anyone know how I complain about this because I have been searching everywhere and dont seem to be able to find anything. Its ridiculous and I am fed up of travelling back and forth to London - I might aswell have paid for applecare. ALso i heard that they replace it after the 4th time.. i am just waiting for that time now!!

I heard they replace it after the 3rd time... Anyway, if my iBook comes back with an issue again, I won't leave the store without a brand new one, believe me... Just complain to the customer service... it is unacceptable.

I am unable to take it back to the Regent Street store yet as I've got to finish my Degree but I have found the time to speak to Trading Standards and write Apple a very long letter...

Happy ending for me after 3 months... I got a phone call from the Apple store, and they told me they couldn't fix the audio issue. I just picked up a brand new 1.2ghz iBook replacement

Apple Store in Tampa just told me 5 times for repairs and they'll give you a new computer. Which is too bad, seeing as I just dropped my G3 iBook off for a THIRD time to get the logic board fixed again.
