Hi all,
I am currently the owner of a 1Gig 17" PowerBook. I have been toying with the idea of getting a new 1.67Gig PowerBook, once Tiger is released. As I sit here on my balcony, having a hard time seeing the screen in daylight (under an umbrella), I was wondering if the screen on the new PowerBooks has improved in brightness at all? I know when I compare my screen to the ultra-bright screen on my 20" Apple Display, I can definitely see how dim it really is.
anyone upgrade from an older PB to a new 1.67Gig and can report back on screen brightness (better, worse, same?)
Thanks,
elfer

You can't compare a laptop LCD to a desktop display. Powerbook backlights will never be bright enough to compete because of power needs. Desktop LCDs have all the power they will ever need so they will always be brighter. As for comparing brightness between machine revs, you really can't do that either. As an LCD and its backlight ages, it will naturally get dimmer. There's nothing to be done about this. So a brand new machine will always be brighter than even a year old machine. Not much, but noticable. And a backlit LCD outside in your example is never going to be completely visable without some shade. Buy a new machine because you need the performance or if there is something wrong with your current machine, not because the screen looks better.

It didn't seem that my 15" was any brighter than my 15" TI was when it was new... I think that spec wise, the new 17 is the same as the old.

All LCD's flouresent bulbs degrade in performance over time so there may be a difference from older to new but thats not a definate.
