I'd let it sleep in both instances.

I only shut mine down after an Apple update, when I'm going to be away from my computer for more than 3 days or when I have to fly internationally with it.

ah ok
i will do so from now, and concerning battery when in sleep mode, apple says you should keep the battery juices flowing that is rehcarge use and recharge, etc... when in sleep mode shall i keep the ac adapter in or use battery and recharge?
and one other thing, when in sleep mode, does the computer continue on with whatever thats happening like downloading a huge file or ripping a dvd, etc, or does it halt everyuthing until you wake it up?
thanks again

If my PowerBook is fully charged I usually let it sleep on battery, it doesn't use much battery power during sleep at all.
When in sleep your PowerBook will not continue doing anything. The HDD is parked etc, so whatever you are doing will stop until you wake it up again.

PowerBook 12" Combo 1.5Ghz 1.25GB Ram 100GB HDD - Yep it's PPC! I'll wait for the 3rd generation MacTel when they're at their best :)

Is there any way to close the lid and not make the PB sleep? I know you can do it for other laptops but I can't figure out a way for Mac.

I once did a rough estimate and found that the battery would sustain the PB in sleep mode for about a week (plus or minus) before it died. Leaving it sleep overnight nets approx a 5-8% discharge in battery level. I would say that re-charging 8% every day is worse for the battery than just leaving the AC adapter plugged into the PB. If you are that concerned about your battery- simply remove it from the PB and keep it somewhere until you need it. I usually remove the battery from my PB if I play games on it- so that it will not heat up.
Ideally the best charge level for long term storage is around 40%, but storing it at 100% for several days should not hurt. The 40% thing is more for if you are going to store the battery for months at a time.
