A few days ago my Rev D 12" stopped sleeping according to the Energy Saver settings. The screen saver will come on and the display will go to sleep but I have to make the 'book go to sleep manually. This happens whether I'm on AC or battery power.
* Edit to add that this happens also both in clamshell and normal usage (when the lid is open). Closing the lid to put it to sleep works so it's not a latch issue.
Don't recall anything major happening with the hardware or software, so am really at quite a loss here to explain what's going on. I've tried restarting and fixing permissions but to no avail.
Any help in Guru-land?
** PRAM and the Power Manager have been reset, problem still persists

This is a known problem, with no known solution. Zapping pram etc is what everyone will normally tell you to do, but my Tibook 1Ghz hasn't put itself to sleep in over 2 years. There are some threads here about it, but basically you're stuffed. It just won't work and no-one seems to be able to explain why.
Sorry not to offer more help, but if you figure out a way to make it happen, please tell the rest of us.

This happens to me too but randomly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When I notice it doesn't, usually I restart the system.

Well it works now, but I don't know what I did to get it working again.
The only thing different that I did was to force it to sleep using the Schedule option, after that it seemed to obey the sleep option under screen saver.
Macs are so tempermental sometimes.

You mentioned that you've reset the PRAM. Have you reset the NVRAM? The other thought I've got is to repair permissions and/or run OnyX (free download from versiontracker.com.

I called AppleCare and they told me that
"... all major applications should be made to quit or else the Powerbook might not go to sleep when scheduled to"
Examples of major programs according to them were web browsers, Mail.app and all iLife apps.
It worked perfectly till a few weeks ago though, so I'm tempted to say that what they told me was bull***t. Should I?
If I were going to quit "all major apps" every time then what would the point of putting the 'book to sleep? I might as well log out, no?
I'm still going to try their suggestion to quit all the programs I have running and see what happens.

I posted on the Apple discussion boards and got this reply
The problem, as it occurred in my case, was in corrupted PowerManagement preferences file (a 'plist' file). You might want to give yourself a try: (i) move the file into the Trash, (ii) enter the System Admin password and after that the system should set a fresh file by itself.
The file is located in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
It has helped me twice already . I hope it works in your case.
Regarding 'quitting the major apps' to make your sweet case go asleep: it practically indicates need to hide them eventually, not to quit them at all. This would not be rational in my point of view. Anyway, I've done it many times (hiding tha apps), it works in all occasions. The Mail.app daemons are 'tricky' - true from my reckoning.
Best wishes,
Michael M***
I followed the instructions and it *seems* to have worked.
If other people who were having the same problem want to try this please let me know if it worked for you.
