Left bay doesn't charge pismo battery

The title pretty much says it all. The left side expansion bay on my pismo won't charge batteries. It will discharge them quite happily, but going the other way it is worthless. Has anyone else faced this? Any fixes?

(I would just use the right bay except that is where the CD player goes.)
