I'm a bit puzzled by this - I have a battered old 500 MHz 2001 iBook with a broken screen and I'm trying to use an external monitor on it. My external VGA monitor is old and crummy and won't go higher than 60Hz.

Under OS 9.2 I get the following screen options:
640x480 60Hz
800x600 60Hz
1024x768 75Hz

But under OS 10.3 I get the following options:
640x480 60Hz
800x600 75Hz
1024x768 75Hz

...meaning that if I'm to run OS 10.3 I'm limited to a 640x480 screen resolution, but under OS 9 I can have 800x600.

Anyone know why the difference between OS 9 and OS 10.3? I would have thought it would depend on the hardware not the OS! And is there any way round this? Screen under/overclocking tricks I've seen mentioned say they don't work on iBooks, well not mine any way...

Mainly because 60hz is hard on the eyes. Unfortunately for you OS X doesn't allow you to select the refresh rate on the external montior. I think it could work with the spanning hack, but unfortunetely for you, the spanning hack doesn't work (and would destroy) the 500mhz iBook... Your monitor is just too old...; sorry.

I'm too tired to read into this, but this nifty little app is worth a shot: http://www.madrau.com/html/SRX/indexSRX.html
