I am a new Mac user and am wondering what the best AV software for the ibook is. I want to install software even though i know that Mac aren't as suseptable to viruses I want to be safe. If any has any suggestions let me know. Thanks.

You should probably ask/research this in the Applications forum for some better results, since AV software isn't really hardware specific. But to help you out with your question, if you create a trial .Mac account, you can download Virex for free. I have heard a lot of talk about staying away from Symantec/Norton products in OS X. I personally don't run any virus protection, but if i did, i would go with Virex based solely on reputation.

seriously, there are no, and i mean *no* viruses on osx. none at all. not a single one. if there ever is one you will hear all about it because it'll be big news, and there'll be a patch out to kill it quicker than a quick thing (and even if there isn't a patch out that fast, it'll take just as long for any mac antivirus to come up with a definition for it).

current antivirus software on macs simply stops you spreading pc viruses which is a nice, neighbourly thing to do and will score you karma points and pennies in heaven, but it won't affect your mac at all. unless the antivirus makes your new ibook crash (cough-symantec-cough), which seems to be a reasonably common problem...

eta - i forgot about ms word / excel macros which can still get you, and your standard pc viruses if you're running a windows emulator. if you're not running office or windows though, you're sorted.

yip, in that case you should ignore my little rant

just make sure that you do some homework on which av you use, cos some do cause problems. there should be some threads that'll help you decide over in the apps forum.

This should have been in the Apps forum, and right now there are actually zero viruses/trojans/worms in the wild that attack the Mac OS. But stay tuned; you never know when the baddies will try a real challenge and target us!

BTW, I like Symantec's AV packages on Macs (PCs too).
