I have a 30 GB hard drive on my ibook and I know it is too small. Is the only way to get a larger hard drive to use and external one?

no, the internal hard drive can be replaced by disassembling the bottom half of the machine. it is not a particularly hard process, but it can be time consuming.

there are a number of guides online that can show you the steps involved:
guides for various portable models
a guide for just the ibook
another guide

make sure you have exactly the right sizes of screwdrivers and torx for the job (as you don't want to strip a screw) and have the time and patience to follow all of the steps.
