What are those "wings" on my PB's power-brick?
I noticed that I can open a set of "wings" at the end of my Powerbook's power-brick.
What are these intended for? Do they switch the voltage? Are they simply for show? (doubtful) Are they intended to hang from something?

It'll seem so obvious once you know...
...they're for wrapping the power cord around--the thin cord from the adapter to the brick can wrap around the wings, and attach with the small "clamp" near the adapter end.

mrmister,
WOW! You are right ... it *IS* obvious now. (And I was having my wife fabricate a velcro thingy to keep my cord in check ....) This is sweet!
Thanks!
(I'm actually glad I asked this question now!)

Let's face it, the use of the powerbrick wings are not quite as obvious as the cup-holder.
(Especially when the cord for the Powerbrick come with a twist-tie.

Apple’s been aggressively removing that feature unfortunately. Even if the iMac G5 had it, it would be almost vertical. What are they smoking up at Cupertino?

Denoted clearly at the Apple Store:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL....6.25.7.11.1.3
and I'm sure in the included instruction manual.

I kinda hated it on the powerbrick.
The wings on my iBook's powerbrick broke within the first year, and Apple refused to cover it because it was due to wear and tear when I've been taking care of my stuff and minimize wrapping the cord with it.

2 of my 3 AC adaptors have had that problem too.

I travel a lot and the wings on my powerbook have stayed intact. What I am more careful about is how I wrap the big powercord so that it doesn't fray or tear where it goes into the brick. This happened on a couple of my old ibook bricks. The connection on the powerbook brick does seem to have improved however.

Yeha I have a crack in my brick after a few months...Apple said it wasnt dangerous and even if I had it one day it would still be considered wear and tear...they aint giving anything up.

I use the wings to hang my brick up. I don't like keeping the brick on my carpet floor since it gets so hot and it is easier to get to this way since I don't have to bend over. I tied 2 twist ties around my metal cubes next to my bed and slip a wing into each side. This lets the hot brick rest against a mostly open surface and lets me get to it and remove it quickly when I travel. Oh and yes I knew what the wings were for.

I originally liked the wings, but have eventually just ended up wrapping the cord around the brick itself, having come to the conclusion that it takes too much effort to wrap the cord around the wings in a way that makes the package smaller than simply wrapping the cord around the brick. Plus, the wings are prone to breakage.
Personally, I thought the cable management design of the yo-yo power brick was far more clever

I didn't buy my powerbrick from the Apple Store ... it came included with my Powerbook, hence I wouldn't have searched online for individual components that come in the box. Sorry if I inconvenienced you by asking a question here and forcing you to read this thread.

No problem. I love sharing knowledge. I should be able to expound something from my recent 4 years working at Apple on the very laptops people discuss here.
I just find it interesting when people who have tons of posts ask questions like this.

Thanks for proving my point.
If you don't mind me saying, (and I don't mean this with any ill will) you make an arrogant assumption about my post-count.
Most of those have been in the lounge, or PowerMac forums. My Powerbook is my first Apple branded notebook EVER. I've never SEEN a Powerbook power-brick before and it's safe to say that I don't know of any other powerbricks in history with a "wing" setup like that. Most powerbricks that I have experience with (Toshiba, IBM) have a velcro mechanism. The closest thing I've seen to that wing-configuration is when it is designed for some sort of rack mount or something similar. (Hence, my original question.)
So ... the next time you find a question "interesting" perhaps you should ask why someone is asking the question instead of assuming that they are an idiot.
I hope when you spent your 4 years working at Apple you didn't interact with any "switchers". If you did, I'd be surprised if they didn't switch back.

Well then, in the interest of peace and harmony in the universe, I am sorry if I came across like an a$$. :-)
(It's a rough day for me ..... heading out to my mother's memorial service ... I'm a bit touchy.)
