how much does extra ram effect battery life?

I am considering going from 512mb to 1024, will this cause a significant decrease in my battery life? thanks

Nothing you'll directly notice. Maybe a few minutes, but not much more.

plus you have to add in that more real ram means less VM which means less Hard drive access which is more of a drain on your battery then extra ram.

This is what I have found with my ibook. Going from 256mb to 768mb actually increased my battery life. Well maybe not increased but it did not lower it.
