i want to get a lite-on internal dvd-rw drive and hook it up to my pb with one of those external IDE kits (usb or firewire, doesn't matter)... is there anyway of knowing whether my mac will recognize the drive and be able to burn with it? i've done it before with my friend's converted LG drive, but it was a relatively old drive... also, the drive which i intend on getting is going to be dual-layer and i believe this may be an issue for os x.... any insights on dual-layer and os x?

i really don't want to drop big bucks on a certified external drive when i can make a far better one for half the price... thanks in advance...

check the database at xlr8yourmac.com, it's an absolutely wonderful resource for all these questions.

if you check places like dealmac.com and dealsontheweb.com you'll find stuff like a Pioneer DVR109 for $59

Also, check barefeats.com for the speed tests between fw-400, fw-800, and usb 2.0. You may want to get a fw-400 and usb 2.0 case, but you'll always want to hook it to the Mac using firewire.
