That stuff looks like aluminum-colored paint.

Have you thought about trying a metal polish like Brasso? Metal polish can do wonders for minor scratches and blemishes. Just be sure to test it on an inconspicuous area of the computer before trying it on the scratch.

I could find Brasso in the supermarket in the UK. The supermarkets in my city carry metal polish with a different brand name, but it seems to work just as well. You should be able to find it either in a supermarket or a hardware store (Brasso or a liquid metal polish equivalent).

I've used Brasso on the plastic screen of my iPod to get rid of small scratches and bring back the luster to the chrome case, and it's excellent at removing scratches from watch crystals, too. I haven't actually used it on a powerbook, but it did seem to make my iPod's scratches less noticeable. Be careful to always put the liquid on a cotton ball before applying to the area to be polished, never pour it directly on something as delicate as a powerbook or iPod.

The stuff's pretty inexpensive (about $5 for a big bottle), so it's not a huge expense if it doesn't work and at least all the metal items in your home will look like new.

If you had a picture of the scratch, I could give you a good idea whether Brasso would work.
