The new PowerBooks has a "faster" processor. That doesn't mean they are actually particular faster. It's still the old system bus, memory etc. Wait a couple of months, I think we will se new PowerBooks at WWDC.

I will only buy a new pb17 when it has a different case. I use mine for presentations, so I just need the newest model for the design. therefore I just stuff my 17" with a new 7200rpm drive and lots of ram.

I have a 15" 1 GHz. I'm waiting for the next PowerBook revision myself before I upgrade. I'm hoping for a G5, but the 7448 is also reasonable, with its 1 MB L2.

One thing I will point out is Apple's statement that a G5 is required to decode H.264 HD. It just goes to show you that the G4 still does have some significant limitations compared to the G5. An iMac 1.6 can do the task, but a dual 1.42 Power Mac G4 cannot.

Yeah, I saw that and I am not sure about the reason. It is the much higher FPU performance of the G5, the memory bandwidth, both?

I'm waiting for either a dual-core G4 or a G5 PB. Otherwise, it's not worth it yet to upgrade.

I think it's going to be awhile for sure. Apple just refreshed the line with an update.

January 31st; June would make it a very short cycle, but then you get the impression that the current models are really just keeping the lineup alive until a major change.
