I'm not sure if this is the problem or not.

I shut the lid on my PB15 ... this should have put it to sleep. When I came back a few hours later and opened the lid the computer was unresponsive. The bottom was also VERY VERY VERY VERY hot.

has anyone experienced anything like this?

Later it powered on just fine. It seems like it shut down to overheating.

I would say that you had maybe a kernel panic. Look if there is a panic.log file in Console (/Applications/Utilities/Console). The location for this file is /Library/Logs/.

If I don't see a panic.log in there, would it mean that my kernel didn't panic?

Actually I think the problem *might* have been related to a wireless USB mouse that I had hooked up to it. (I have not yet had the time or money to go out and pick up a Bluetooth mouse yet ..)

If you had never a kernel panic, then there is no panic.log file. But if you had at least one kernel panic, then the panic.log may exist. It seems that sometimes the system is unable to write the panic.log file (which normally is updated in each kernel panic), but i don't know under what circumstances.

Overheating from a USB mouse? Never heard of that before. Not that it is impossible, I just don't know.

I've shut the lid on my TiBook before, and noticed that it didnt go to sleep - some software stopped it. It wouldnt have to be a kernal panic. That's probably all that happened here - something prevented your computer from going to sleep, and kept the processor going steady for a long while. When you came back to it, it was probably still on, and hadnt shut down if it was still that hot. But the software had stalled it mid-sleep so you had no screen.

I'd just watch it to be sure it doesnt happen again.

Kinda what I think happened ... the USB mouse prevented my computer from going to sleep. It thought it was going to run in "clamshell" mode or something. I had this "screen protector" in place over the keyboard to prevent finger oils from getting on the screen ... which probably contributed to the heat in some way. (Kinda like a blanket I guess)

USB devices preventing Powerbooks from sleeping or waking them up is a known feature. However, in your first message you said the Powerbook was unresponsive. This is not what happens when the Powerbook remains awaken from a USB device. That's why I suggested to look up for panic logs.

You are correct. Even jigging my mouse didn't wake it up. (Could that be because of the overheating shutdown?)

I had the same thing happen to me this morning, but unlike you, I dont use any external mouse or anything. The bottom wasnt noticably hotter, and I know it was asleep last night.

I've got no kernal panic log either, and my battery was fully charged (plugged in).

I'm curious as to whether these problems are related. I just updated to 10.3.9, but I dont think that could be the problem as I havent noticed anything else.
maybe you've been brainwashed too.

I had another occurance of this tonight, only this time I was using it when my battery got low enough to put my powerbook to sleep. I immediately plugged it in, only to find I could not get it to wake. My backlit keyboard was on, but the sleep light turned off, and I had no response from the computer.

I'm not too concerned, but I just thought I'd post this. I've never had these problems before though.
