I just bought some RAM from OWC and it had an odd metal "sheath" on it that said if removed the warranty was voided, w/e. Well I removed it, and underneath the usual little black rectanges aren't black--theyre very shiny silver...is this RAM safe to use in my powerbook? Without the "sheath" does it matter that these are silver (ie do the black ones have some sort of heat shielding?). I dont want to break my new powerbook =(. Thanks.

Well I put it in and it does work it seems (the mac picks it up, says I have 1gb of ram). I'm more just worried about heat issues, or stuff shorting out, etc...

I'm pretty sure those metal "sheaths" were heatsinks. Something like this?

I wouldn't worry about it, but then again, OWC put them on there for a reason.

I had no idea there was such a thing as a heatsink for RAM.

You should see the heatsinks they put on RDRAM back when it was briefly popular...You couldn't see the chips at all - totally enclosed in an enclosure.

But is there some reaon this ram would need a heatsink? The apple design has me scared here--that ram is very close, very confined and with a second chip on top not getting any ventilation...
