do the hard drives park their heads when a powerbook is put into sleep mode? I ask because I wonder whether it's better to transport a powerbook after shutting it down rather than merely putting it to sleep.... or perhaps it doesn't matter and it's safe to carry the laptop around no matter what?
I have one of the newer powerbooks with the shock sensor, though I wouldn't want to test it out!

Sleep is perfectly fine. The only reason you ever need to shut your PB down is if you're installing new software/updates, or if you won't be using it for 24-48 straight hours.
Aside from that, let it sleep. The hard disk sleeps as well so any shocks would NOT effect data. You aren't harming your PB in any way by letting it sleep. Honestly, Apple has the best "Sleep" system I've ever seen...the WinXP "Stand By" mode is horrid. Sometimes it won't wake up, sometimes it will and everything lags, it's just not designed well. I *Always* keep my PB in sleep instead of shutting down, even when jogging to & from classes while it's in a backpack. You're fine w/ it in sleep mode

i kno it's stupid, but i always carry the computer around the house open (rev. c 12")... don't want to disconnect from the network, so i just walk around with the lid open and try avoid vibrations... i believe with the new pbs it should be totally fine, since they have that protection built in...
