I have a 15" aluminium PowerBook whose fan makes a weird noise when it comes on. It kinda sounds like there's something hitting the fan blades, and it seems to be located somewhere near the screen hinge on the left. I brought it in for repair as my HD had crashed, and mentioned this, but they didn't seem to care much and dismissed it as being "normal behaviour". It still bugs the heck out of me though. Anyone else notice this?

Mine does that. It sort of sounds like it's not "smooth" and the sounds has a warbly quality to it. In contrast, when I got the right side fan to turn on, it was quiet and smooth.

I don't know if it's normal, but it was annoying.

I wish Apple would find out what kind of fans were used in my old IBM Thinkpad T20/P3-700. The blower fan on that would come on, and you couldn't even tell unless your hand was resting near the exhaust vent, and the only sign was a warm wind suddenly hitting your skin.

So! Is THAT the noise I've suddenly started hearing on the left side?

I'm relieved it's not the hard drive, but upset about the noise.

Seeing as I have to take my unit in for a bad keyboard (sticking, etc.) I'll have them look at this, too. If they feed me the "it's no big deal" line, all hell is going to break loose, because it has NEVER sounded like that.
