Hello,
I am a beg. DJ and want to start recording some of my stuff. I do have everything pluged in and working but....
I see that in the prefrences under sound and under input, line in i see there is sound. But at the same time i want to be able to hear it on the speakers (built in) on the mac. Is this possible? If so why cant I? The volume is turned up and its not muted...any ideas?

Ok under audio devices at the bottom I am guessing you want me to check where it says thru? I cant its grayed out...
Defualt input: Built in
Properties for: built in audio
clock source: cant change
Master stream grayed out
Source Line in
Format 44100.0Hz
2ch 16 bit
Default output: built in
System output: built in
Audio output:
Cofigure speakers grayed out
Master stream grayed out

Yes, the Master stream is greyed-out, but there should be a check box at the right labeled "Direct" or "play-thru" or something of the sort.
There is on my machines, and it works.

Ok I have found that if you use line in you must use line-out, you can not use internal speakers, that is in Mac OS X. Now the software (SOME) will allow you a pass thry feature, like Sound Studio, I am sure Peak does as well but haven't found the option or done searching.
Now if you are using external midi devices and have drivers for them to be set up in that midi area where you make connections then I believe you might be able to.
Also from further research it seems not all powerbooks can do it becuase of the type of card, I know the older ones didnt have this issue

I just realized this is the case with my Powerbook. I connected an audio device (minidisc player) to the linein and I can the sound input but nothing to let me hear it with the internal speakers in the Audio/midi utility.
This is pretty stupid for the Apple to diable this. I tried plugging in headphones to the audio out and still couldn't hear anything. I have both the player and the audio output set to full blast.
