Hi guys,
My 12" powerbook (rev b) suddenly stopped working this morning. During the normal boot sequence, the grey apple logo turned into a stop sign (circle with a diagonal line in the middle). This happened a couple of times over the past week, and I managed to solve it by booting with the os X cd, and run disk utility to repair permission. However, this time, the hard drive doesnt even show up in disk utility when i boot from cd (although it does show up as one of the boot device when i press option after the power on sound).

I tried running the apple hardware test from the cd, both the quick and extended tests passed ok. Also tried resetting the PRAM with command-option-P-R

Then I tried running in single user mode, and the following is what i got on the screen,

standard timeslicing quantum 10000 us
vm_page_bootstrap: 187969 free pages
mig_table_max_displ = 68

Still waiting for root device

then the last line just repeats itself, I waitied for at least an hour and nothing changed...

any help is greatly appreciated (this is my main machine, can't work with out it .... posting from a windows machine now..)

many thanks

Hate to say it, but your hard drive is probably toast. If you can boot from another device and mount it, backup your stuff to something. If it doesn't even mount, you'll need to use a tool a little better than Disk Utility to get your stuff off the drive.

I think the hard disk is defective. In which case, it would be more accurate to say:
“still waiting for rooted device”
