Im wanting to connect my 12" powerbook to my external monitor...
Is it possible to not use the pb lcd and use the external monitor on a higher resolution than the pb?
Thanx

yes, you need to put the PB to sleep, plug in the external monitor, and wake up the PB without waking up its LCD. How? Simple, with an external keyboard or mouse. Don't have one? Just plug in or unplug some USB or other peripheral device and the PB will wake up if its AC adapter is plugged in. Once it has woken up, then you can open the lid and use the PB keyboard or leave it closed and run in clamshell mode.
PS. you can also run the PB lcd + an external monitor at different resolutions. If you turn mirror mode off in preferences, you can set each display independently and even set the main display by dragging the white menu bar in the diagram to the display you want. You can also drag the displays around and position them where you want to be able to move from one to the other.
Pretty neat

it doesnt bother you at all? if the resolution on the pb is lower than that of the external, wouldnt it strain your eyes? im taking my brothers 17" NEC LCD to college with me next year, so i was wondering if i should just use both my pb screen and the 17". its for my desktop (PC...) but i dont use the PC much now

When I'm in the dorm I almost always have my powerbook hooked up to a samsung 191T lcd (1280x1024). There is no noticeable eye strain at all. The pixels on the powerbook are smaller than those on my LCD; however, if you get a newer LCD, like the ultrasharp dell 20" models, the pixel size should be very similar. All in all it makes little difference. An LCD with larger pixels can actually make it easier to read some things because the text is bigger (and usually brighter) than on a powerbook LCD. I do however prefer higher resolutions as I'm always wanting more usable space. It's just a toss up between more space/easier to read. If you don't have bad eyes I would recomend getting the highest resolution external monitor that you can.

No, it doesn't really bother me. I use the PowerBook screen for programs like Mail/iTunes/FTP and do my main work on my external monitor.
