What is the performance(exclusive games and pro image vidoe editing) difference between PB(1.5G) and mini(1.42G),with the sum amount of RAM e.g 1GB?
cheers

There were once four people named Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody. Somebody had to do a job, but Nobody wanted to do it. Nobody could see that Anybody could do it, and Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Nobody ended up doing it, and it so happened that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I have a PB17, 1.5Ghz, 1.5GB of ram and a new mini (1.42Ghz,1GB of ram).
The PB feels faster but not much. The video card is better on the PB so you get the Tiger ripple in Dashboard.
That said, the mini is very capable. Almost silent and very cool. It does well in PhotoShop and I haven't had any spinning beach balls on it.
Haven't tried video or games yet. Was going to give Doom a try and see just how well it does (or doesn't) on it.

I recently upgraded from a Mac mini (1.42GHz/512MB/80GB/SuperDrive/AEX&BT) and ran the system off an external 7200RPM drive. The stock 4200RPM is a little slow. However, Tiger runs excently on it (as did Panther).
I say upgraded as I am now using a PowerBook 15-inch (1.5GHz/512MB/80GB) machine and Tiger is a bit nicer with the extra eye candy. However, there is little real world improvement, and that if any comes from the stock 5400RPM drive in the PowerBook (I see no need to run the system off an external drive because of the faster internal drive than the mini).
Both are great ... I am selling my Mac mini as I need a portable (traveling more).
And I like eye candy!
p.s.
Obviously upgrading PowerBook to 1.5GB RAM (just bought at Tiger launch event)
1GB in Mac mini was costing too much from Apple and I do not have the heart to open it myself

Since the Powerbooks are designed for portability first and speed second, in most cases a desktop PowerMac will run faster at the same clockspeed. That said, the number one factor in the mini design was cost, so the graphics card probably makes the machine slower than any similar speed powerbook (actually, it seems that there are mostly notebook componets in the mini anyway)

Why does apple not bould a powerbook that puts speed first and portabillity second. Maybe the powerbook is a little thicker but has the speed of a descktop. That would bee nice...

Dell makes laptops with desktop mobile P4s in them (i.e. NOT centrino) and they are hot, thick, and heavy (roughly 7-9 pounds). They perform like desktops but don't do much else. Not exactly an Apple-sort of image. When Apple puts out a computer it's elegant not only in construction but in performance as well.

Because that's what desktop computers are for. That said, I'd put my PB17 up to most tasks.

In a way they already do - its called the 17" iMac and guess what, it's heavy and like a brick (relative to the PowerBook). Apple already builds the fastest PowerBook they can. If they overcame the heat issues by building thicker, heavier less feature-ful powerbooks, the main issue would then most likely become the appalling battery life they would get with faster processors. All-in-all, not very appealing to any demographic other than a very, very small minority of purchasers.
