http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/coreimage/

I have not yet upgraded to Tiger but this page is seriously bumming me out. As best I can determine, my graphics card is an ATI 9600 and Core Image requires an ATI 9600 XT. Could anyone confirm this? Hard to believe that a year and a half old Powerbook is not up to date enough to run the latest graphic technology.

I have the same powerbook as you, and yes, core image is supported. Don't know why it isn't stated at the link you provided, but your computer is far from being obsolete!

How can you tell whether core image works or not? I have yet to notice it anything different about it at all... except for the dashboard ripples.

Core Image requires any GPU capable of the pixel and vertex shader 2.0 standard. All Radeon Mobility 9600 chips, Radeon 9500 chips, GeForce Go FX 5200, GeForce FX 5200 and up are capable of Core Image. Keep in mind that Apple's list also said something to the effect of "support includes the following," so just because they don't specifically list a chip doesn't mean it isn't supported. Although, I definitely wouldn't recommend the FX 5200 if anyone is thinking of putting it in an old PowerMac G4. The FX series of graphics cards have pretty nasty pixel shader 2.0 performance.
