I'm thinking of upgrading from my Titanium PowerBook 867MHz to a 1.5GHz Aluminium PowerBook. I was going to try to hold out till the G5 was launched, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen for a while. I'm having performance issues with GarageBand, Logic and Reason, iPhoto is pretty slow for me, as is iMovie. Even with the Tiger upgrade, I'm getting the beachball more often than I'd like.

The option right now would be to spend about €250 on this machine getting some more memory (I have 512MB at the moment) and a new battery (I'm down to about an hour with the original), or dump it on eBay and buy a new 1.5GHz Alubook. I reckon I'll lose about €500 on the deal if I upgrade. I have a window in which to get a new one for about 20% off the list price if I order it in the next week or so.

What I want to know is whether the upgrade is worthwhile. Is the difference between the Tibook and the Alubook going to be noticeable and worth the money or should I hold onto the TiBook and wait for a G5 to come out?

I don't own a 1.5Ghz Al Pb, (I have a 667 TiBook), but I have a friend who just bought a 17in 1.67
the day Tiger was released. I played with it, and I can tell you this much... it's more than twice the clock speed of my machine (and nearly twice that of yours), and it feels like it.

Doesn't mean there aren't any hiccups, however.

I had a 1.5 15" AlBook and an 867 TiBook and while the AlBook was definitely faster, you still get the ball quite a bit with anything heavy.

It feels like a nominal increase, not a new paradigm by any means. You'd be wait less time when the ball came up, but it'd still be there just as often.

If I were you I'd get the new memory and battery and hold out just a little longer. I imagine Apple has to be doing something significant by Sept.
