I'm having blue screen problems when i'm starting up my powerbook. I've tried all the options suggested on the apple support site but to no avail. Can anybody offer any suggestions or help?
There is one question somebody might be able to answer,
when i log on in Single User Mode i've tried the fsck mode and its saying the following:
'use the -f option to force checking'
can anybody tell me what this means or what i should type?
Thanks

Please define at what point you are seeing this blue screen. The only point I can think of is during boot after the Apple logo has disappeared and after the boot progress indicator has disappeared but before desktop elements appear. Do you get a spinning beachball at this point? Do you have an external monitor attached? A better description of the problem is necessary. A Mac blue screen is a completely different beast from the PC BSOD and has more to do with mode switching and OS installation rather than just a crash.

Basicially what happened was i was using Photoshop CS and the Powerbook just froze up totally. I turned off the Powerbook and the blue screen just came up, nothing else. Also the startup sound is'nt coming on now either. I hope its something straightforward to fix, if you can offer any advice it's be great, thanks.

You got a blue screen even before the gray apple appeared? I've never seen that. Can you boot from a DVD? Also, have you reset PRAM?

No, I mean boot from your OS DVD that came with your Powerbook (insert the disk and hold down the c key during boot). As for resetting the PRAM, hold command-option-p-r at boot time until you hear the startup chime twice, then let go.

How much ram has it got? If you installed some ram after you bought the pb it might be causing these problems, although apple says with a memory error you should get a breaking glass sound..... It could be possible that the sound has been turned off in the os.

Bad RAM hasn't made the breaking glass sound in years, especially not on any recent Macs. Bad RAM that the system can't bypass and continue boot causes three beeps and a flashing sleep LED. I forget what the pattern is.
