Sorry if anyone reads this before my edit, having a difficult time for some reason.

A while ago I used the firmware updater mentioned in this thread: http://forums.macnn.com/69/mac-notebooks/172237/firmware-patch-matshita-uj-815-drive/. This worked great in Panther, and I've been using it for months. It seems Apple was savvy about this and didn't like it. Since upgrading to Tiger, when I insert a blank DVD-R the Finder says the drive isn't supported. Fortumently I have the downgrader still, but I would prefer to find a way to avoid that. Has anyone who used this updater had similar problems in Tiger?

P.S. If anyone feels like flaming me for trying this, save it. I knew the downgrader worked before trying this.

Edit: Just thought I would add some more information. I updated the firmware from UJ-815 to UJ-815A. CD-Rs don't work with the Finder either. Fortunately, Toast does work.

Good to know. I'll be sure to 'downgrade' before I upgrade to Tiger. I've used it successfully since Nov, 2003 in Jaguar and Panther on my machine.

You could probably enable vendor support with a utility called Patchburn.

I just did a Tiger archive and install, and on my revA PB17 it does recognize my firmware-upgraded burner (at least it says so in system profiler). Even recognizes my D101 firmware as 'Apple Shipped/Supported).

I'll check for sure (am burning a disk with Toast, works fine) with blank disk and/or iTunes later.

I flashed the firmware on a 15" 1 GHz TiBook and have had no problem using my drive after updating to Tiger. It also reads as D101.
