I'm going to buy my first Mac and trying to choose between iBook 12" and PowerBook 12", mostly for regular home usage with some photoshop and simple digital video work. One of the main issues is usage of second monitor, and I understand there is a hack for iBook. I leaning towards iBook due to "price vs. powerbook's little advantages", and have been planning to upgrade iBook's RAM right away as well as replace HDD with larger and faster one (5400 or 7200 RPM).
Can anyone tell me if upgrading the HDD will void iBook warranty? Also, would such upgrade really increase overall speed of iBook? I think price-wise such upgrade is still cheaper than to buy PowerBook. Thanks.

ok you're new here so i'm going to be really nice....

having a certified tech install your hd will not void your warranty, you doing it yourself will. powerbook has 64mb of vram and could be used in closed lid operation...ibook can not operate in closed lid and when spanning you split the vram amongst both screens 16mb a piece. just wait on your purchase for about a month to a month and a half...you'll be glad you did when the new ones come out....they're sooo over due.

thanks iREZ. sorry, i didn't mean to initiate another "ibook vs pbook" treat. just wanted to know experience of others regarding upgrading the HDD and if it really makes the noticeable difference.
