Hello,

I've spent the past hour or so searching the forums for programs and methods to reburn my own commercial DVDs. After reading thread by thread I came to the conclusion that some methods have issues and others may not.

I was wondering if anyone can give me a detailed step-by-step guide on how to burn a DVD using each individual program and telling me what settings to use with each program. (It would be ideal if the method were free). Thanks in advance!

Check out the Mac Video forum at videohelp.com. Right at the top there's a sticky about how to properly burn using the best software available for the Mac at the moment. You may have to shell out some money, though. Otherwise search the forum for other alternatives.

The easiest way? To buy Roxio Popcorn. Any piece of DVD Recompression software (which you will need since DVD-R's are 4.7GB and commercial DVDs are 7-9GB) will cost you some $$$.

Of them, I recommend DVDRemaster (www.metakine.com). With that you won't need Popcorn, but you will need toast to burn the DVDs.

That said, without pirating the software, Popcorn is the simplest (pretty much one click in a single self contained program) way to do it.

Both, as they are free. I use DVDBackup more often than MacTheRipper, but both have their uses.
Scooters are more fun than computers and only slightly more frustrating

Yes, but you willw ant to use DVDRemaster over DVD2OneX. As I said above, once you rip a commercial DVD, it wll be about 8GB. You can only burn 4.4GB to a DVD-R, so you need to use DVDRemaster to recompress the video to the smaller size.

I have used Popcorn, DVDRemaster, and DVD2OneX, and DVDRemaster gives the consistently best quality of the 3. Popcorn is good for the convenience of having the remastering/burning application in one. Since you have toast, the latter is not an issue for you.

http://www.metakine.com/products/dvdremaster/ is where you can get it.

If you have a dual layer DVD burner, then you won't need to compress most DVD's.
