it seems when i leave my 15 inch on with out closesing the screen it goes into some type of sleep mode, but remains on the internet. but when i just close the lid when i'm done it disconnects from the internet. is there a way to make it so when i close the lid and it is plugged in it remains connected too the internet?

Apple menu --> System Preferences --> Energy saver.

It's not in sleep mode unless the little white LED at the front of the machine is pulsing.

What you're probably seeing is just the monitor switching off (this conserves power, and it prolongs the life of your display).

The point of sleep mode is that the machine is OFF. I'm not sure why you'd want it to be OFF but remain online.

That's a little bit like thinking that the fridge goes into sleep mode when you close the door, since the light goes off, but it still keeps your beer cold as long as it's plugged in. Well, that's because it's not sleeping; it's running full tilt.

Also, the energy saver settings I pointed you to above will allow you to separately sleep the monitor automatically.

Yeah, the "some type of sleep mode" you are talking about is simply screen dimming -- the computer is in no way asleep.

Closing the lid will put the machine to sleep (=one step removed from turned off), which always stops all networking.

You can't have AIM receive messages on a computer that's asleep because nothing is running. All processing is on pause until you wake it.
