Are you sure you aren't holding down the key for too long? I know that on my machine if you hold down the key for over a second or so it thinks you're trying to eject a CD / DVD

Nope....the dashboard shortcut only works when I press FN + f12 together? anyway to fix that? When I just press f12, nothing happens, and on my preferences, it says f12 is the shortcut.

The F12 key is really only F12 when you are holding down the function key, otherwise it's disk eject or whatever. Try remapping it to whatever comes up when you push that key. It might only be able to be used as an eject key. If that's the case, try remapping to the F9 key, etc

system preferences -> dashboard & expose

yea, what real mac said, you have to remap it. f12 is the eject key unless you hold down the function key.
