->my experience with harware upgrades = 0
->my ibook processor speed is 1.33 and its ram is 256.
-> my use:
limewire (download 2 to 3 files) + bittorrent (1 to 2 downloads) + firefox (regular browsing) + Xcode 2 +msn messenger (3 to 4 message windows)
my machine is terribly slow with all those apps running. I thought of selling it and buying a "top of the line" powerbook (which is a retard's solution).
I am planning to upgrad the RAM.
my question is: 512 or 1 gb?
in other words would 512 mb be sufficient to make my machine flow normally with this use? will 512 mb and 1 gb have a difference according to my use? (cuz i think that 1 gb would be suitable for heavier use)
please let me know

I think you should get a 512mb chip. I have a slightly slower ibook and with 768mb ram I think it is at its sweet spot. look at crucial.com and follow the guide to get the ram that is right for you (pc-2100 SO-DIMM although you can get faster ram with no problems).

I ran my 1GHz with 256 for a year before upgrading.
http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/p...4-mem-cip1.pdf will lead you through the upgrade.
It is genuinely easy.
It is snappy now with the additional 512.
Don't get gouged on Crucial - just choose a PC2700 200 pin SO-DIMM yourself. Though the guaranteed one (from choosing iBook/Apple in the mem selector) is cheaper than apple - the standard ram (found by searching yourself) is even cheaper.

Is there much of a performance increase between 768mb and 1.2gb of ram? I'm currently using 512mb on my 1.07ghz iBook and it simply isn't powerful enough. I deal with large video files on a regular basis but even just general usage (using screen spanning) the finder/dock/expose visual effects are laggy.
I'm also upgrading the HD from the standard 30gb to a 60gb 5400rpm drive. Hope that makes a difference too!

To clarify I only mentioned crucial as a guide to see what type of ram the ibook needs so that you can then search for it elsewhere with confidence knowing it will work. Then I mentioned faster ram for two reasons, first because sometimes its cheaper because its newer and there is more supply of it, and second because it will likely be the speed in a future revision and this way you can keep it when you get a new laptop down the road.

Do this upgrade first then reevaluate to see if you need more ram. A faster HD will make a significant difference.
