I know there are older threads if I search, but capacities increase and I just wanted to check the current situation.
I've got a 10GB HD in an iBook G3 500. Can anyone tell me the upgrade options? I know it's going to be a pain installing it, but which HD should I buy to go in there in the first place? Is 40GB still the limit?

You can get a 100GB HD for laptops now. It shouldn't be hard to find a decent hard drive for under $100. Try TigerDirect or Newegg for some of the better prices around the net.

I have the same iBook (500Mhz) and last year I replaced the 10GB hardrive with a Toshiba MK4025GAS which is a 40GB drive running (i think) at 5400 rpm.
For how to do it look at the following:

Patience is what is needed, though at the end of it I did have a couple of screws left. Then at the beginning of this year I upgraded the CD-ROM drive to a DVD/CD-R Combo drive, and had a few extra spare screws at the end of that.... Well it still works and hasn't fallen to bits yet

Willed, I am in the same situation, and I am going to upgrade the iBooks's 10 GB drive to a new, 8 MB cache 5400 RPM, 80 GB one. In fact, I just got the Hard Drive from NewEgg today.

Use an emply ice tray to organize the screws in the order you take them out. It makes it much easier to put them back in and hopefully not forget any.
I've replaced iBook hard drives twice. It's difficult and took me about two hours each time because I was being very careful. With practice, I could probably do it in an hour.

Great, thanks very much guys, very helpful.
One more thing - can anyone recommend an equivalent to NewEgg.com that operates in the UK?
[I'm sure I posted this before but it's disappeared now!]

Finished my hard disk drive upgrade on my iBook! It now sports an 80 GB HDD, and is running smoothly! Next is the eMac... I will post some details of my iBook upgrading later on my blog.

I've always found www.ebuyer.com give good service and good prices. They operate in the US and UK.
