So I decided finally to upgrade the RAM in my Powerbook, as the paging under Tiger makes her quite sluggish. Bought a 512MB Kingmax stick from Newegg. FedEx dropped it off today, I opened up the RAM compartment and put it in (both sticks are seated quite well). But when I boot, I still have only 512MB: About This Mac, System Profiler.

One odd thing is that the PDF upgrade guide refers to the factory-installed card as the "bottom", while my profiler says that the "lower" slot is the empty one. I assume it's just a difference in naming to make the guide make more sense, but I was thinking about taking out the factory stick and putting the new one in the bottom ("upper", I think) slot to see what happens anyway.

I've installed RAM at least half a dozen times before, and I've never had a problem once I got it seated correctly (which I'm pretty sure I did--my digital camera is out of batteries, or I'd post pix), which makes me suspect bad RAM. Unfortunately my system doesn't seem to have come with a hardware test CD. (When did they stop including those?) So I'm not really sure what to do. Any suggestions?

(crossposted at somethingawful sh/sc, sorry if that's not kosher)
