when i play some cds my ibook's drive gets really noisy, sounding like it's vibrating in time with the disk's spinning. i'm currently importing a cd into itunes and it's making my whole ibook vibrate - it's loud enough to hear in the next room.
clearly this isn't good, but it is normal? these are new, commercially produced cds i'm using, and they run fine in my other gear. my ibook's only six months old and i don't want the drive to die on me just yet...
does this happen to other people, or should i be taking this back to apple to get it checked out?

when you take the cd out, is it damaged in any way? My cd drive has died on me before in my ibook. It first just made little scratches after the cd doesn't show up. Then i noticed all the cds got the same marks on it. The rotating swivel in the drive must have gotten misaligned or something along those lines cuz the cd wouldn't come out forcing me to pull it out along wiht a few feather like things. apple care replaced my $600 repair for free of course.
vibrating ibook doesn't sound too good either, it might be a similar problem. I do know that most people are shocked at first at the sound of the cd going into the ibook. the loud cracking and clicking sound thing. it could be that you are over reacting to that?

i haven't noticed any damage yet, and i can't hear anything that sounds like a cd rubbing as it spins. i'll keep an eye out for that, but nothing yet...
i'm wondering if there could be a misalignment like you mention. it's not the initial cd grabbing clicking gurgling noises of a cd going in, but a continuous noise as the cd spins and is read. hmmm, looks like a trip to the apple store might be in order.
cheers!

that is odd. The only time that has ever happened to me is with specific CD's that were unbalanced I guess. If it's doing it with all discs then it's most likely a hardware issue in the drive, which wouldn't be fun.

Some CDs, even commercial ones, make my iBook optical drive vibrate at times. Having said that, I recently had the drive replaced under warranty when it ate a CD and refused to cough it up... the iBook was purchased new in December.
Your drive vibration seems excessive from what you describe. Me thinks that it is time to contact AppleCare before your warranty runs out. The good news is that my iBook was gone less than five days when it went in for the repair.
