hi,
do you think an ibook would be ok for, web surfing, email, occasional games like simcity 4, basic photo editing and homework?

Yeah sure. Why not?
An iBook 12" G4 1.2Ghz with even basic 256MB RAM would do the job easily.

Time out. I'm in absolutely agreement with kristiano except for one small thing: 256 MB of RAM. If you're going to be operating Tiger, you're going to want at least 512 MB. This is spoken out of personal experience. "Basic photo editing" is enough to slow it down just a tad. You'll be a lot happier down the road if you make sure you have 512 MB minimum. Adding 256 MB is as cheap as $30 at Crucial.

It really depends on what you mean by 'photo editing'. If it's PS, then like Jawbone said, get 512MB if it's plain iPhoto organisation and minor editing, 256MB should be fine IMO.

its my opinion that if you want a great mac experience 256mb of memory isnt good enough. i used to have 256 on my ibook G4 and it was fine, i would even run photoshop, itunes, yahoo messenger, and ichat at once. it would lag in photoshop at times. i'd say look for a refurb on apple's website or smalldog.com and use the after money you save to upgrade the memory. good luck

the iBook is great for that kind of stuff, but definately get the 512MB stick. It makes the iBook immensely better, and the cost isn't that much more but don't buy it from Apple, way too over priced. I usually get my RAM from Crucial.com. I have 640MB in my iBook (128 built in, 512 SO-DIMM) and it's great, though I wouldn't mind a bit more

Crucial memory on there site is 93 dollars for 512. That seems alot higher than what other people have said they got from there. Am I missing something or is that the right price is should expect to pay?

The more memory the merrier. Get a gigabyte of RAM if you can, but definitely at least 512 MB. This might even help you get more battery life, since the OS doesn't have to page the disk as often because of lack of real RAM. And, I also recommend Crucial. It's top quality RAM-- the same Apple will sell you at a higher price. There may be cheaper RAM deals, but I recommend Crucial memory.

Question.
- If i buy a gigabyte memory stick, will programs still load as slow as they do with 256mb? (or does the os have to swap between hard-drive and memory with 256, and not with more memory)
the impression i got from the 1,2 ghz 12" ibook in apple retailing stores was that programs loaded rather slow.

An iBook with more memory should respond more quickly than an iBook with less, when memory operations are a factor (such as loading). Did you check to see how much memory the Apple Store iBook had?

In other words, the majority says, "GET 512 MB MINIMUM!"

I will buy one soon, maby even next week (after wwdc start. Let's hope Steve says: "And then we have the new improved iBook...." or something) And i'll put as much memory in as possible (rigth now that is 1,25 Gb) since there is only one free slot rigth now, and if i want to have more later, i can't use the one that fills up the free slot anymore.
For normal use (today) 1,25Gb is way more than needed, 512Mb should be ok. But i still want it... Call me you-who-buy-just-to-have-it or somethin, but the i foud rather cheap memory, so why not.
