Hello all. The last time I had a mac was when IIe was all the rage. Yesterday, I got a 17in powerbook. What are the first things you suggest I do to set up my computer? I've plugged in airport express and installed office mac. What next before I figure out how to put all my files on this computer? Are there any programs I should install (free) from the net? Thanks in advance

a little bit of maintenance will go a long way. repair permissions regularly (say monthly) as well as before and after any software updates or installations. get yourself a program like macjanitor which runs daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance scripts that would otherwise only run if you leave your computer on 24/7. you may want to buy a utility program like diskwarrior for emergency type situations. check out versiontracker.com which has loads of free software.

id sugest creating a 2nd harddrive then for use as a scratch drive. once you have the 2nd drive, open photoshop, and change in the prefrences menu the scratch drive to your 2nd harddrive. the 2nd drive only needs to be a small amount of GB, i have mine at 2gb.

doing this will save your computer in the long run, as if you use photoshop heavily, overtime if your scratch drive is your main drive then your computer will crah and youll use all your info.

better to do it now rather than later (which i did and had to backup all my work which was risky)

You don't need a scratch drive. At all.

How much ram do you have? The more the merrier. For what you said, I'd suggest at least 1GB. 1.5 is as nice number and 2GB is even better. I have 1.5 and I have PS set to use about 85% of available memory needed, which gives it at least 1GB of room to play with. That's more effective than a scratch disk on OSX.

then how come everyone i have spoken to (grahic designers, computer lecturers) have said that a scratch drive is a good idea? my teacher has a completly maxed out G5 in all areas and still has a dedicated scratch.

its useful because everytime you ask photoshop to do something it has to write the info to a harddrive which leaves over information which takes up space on you harddrive. (im not at all a technical person, tried to explain it how i remember) so if you create a 2nd drive it is only using up space on that rive and not cluttering up and slowing your main drive.

i also ahve 1.5 gb and have about 75% set to photoshop when its open.

if you want to set a scratch drive, u insert the osx cd, restart the comp using the cd and open up disk utility i think? i cant remember exactly how i did it.

use the help in your mac and itll tell you how to set up a 2nd drive.
