The superdrive on my 1GHz G4 Ti PB, (OSX 10.4.1) no longer recognises any discs at all. DVD's and CD's are all ejected (blanks, burned and commercial ones). I've changed nothing on my system since it was working this morning. Did install QT 7.0.1 yesterday but it was working subsequently so I don’t see any connection there.

The last two DVD’s that worked successfully cranked up DVD player but both displayed a couple of seconds of garbage on the DVD player window before running correctly. This was an entirelynew phenomena on my machine and I wonder if anyone recognises this symptom as a sign of imminent drive failure.

Unplugged all firewire and USB devices, repaired permissions, zapped pram, restarted etc. No joy.

Is this now an ex-drive, good only for pushing up daisies or is there anything I can do to resurrect it?

Thanks for any suggestions.

It seems like more than a couple of us are experiencing what seems to be the same problem (though with different Mac models), all at the same time.

My gut tells me something is up, and that it isn't just a coincidence. I'll fish around for some more info.

I'm having a similar problem.

Granted, I don't know if it's a new thing, 'cause this is the first time I've had to burn any discs since I bought my PowerBook, but it's still quite annoying.

I bought a box of 25 Imation DVD+RW's, and couldn't wait to start getting some of all my DivX files on to them. However, after much trying, I couldn't get any further than “please insert an empty disc with at least Zero Kb of space available”.

I tried setting the 'start-up action' when inserting an empty DVD in the drive to 'show in Finder', but that resulted in the following error message every time I insert an empty disc (DVD or CD):

“Disken kan ikke bruges, fordi diskdrevet ikke understøttes. (Fejlkode 0x80020025)”

“This disc is not usable, because the disc drive is not supported. (Error code 0x80020025)”

Okay, new development: When I tried switching to my English account to get the above error message right, the recordable DVD did show up in the Finder as a recordable DVD. So apparently, it's got something to do with the main account (which is the standard account), rather than the SuperDrive.

Being still fairly clueless, I am still not sure how to fix it for this account - help?

*bump*

No one?

I am still unable to get it to recognise empty CD's and DVD's on my main user account; I can only get it to recognise them on the other user accounts. Once I've burned the CD's/DVD's from one of the other user accounts, it shows up just fine on my own as well, but it's a bit annoying having to go back and forth all the time, making sure the other accounts have access to the files I want to burn, etc.

Why is it like this, and how can I fix it?!?
