I assume if I bought a notebook at an apple store that it woudl come with Tiger.

But what about Mac Mall and other resellers? It seems that some still come with 10.3.

Is there a way to get Tiger after by calling apple?

I'd rarther buy from someone else to avoid tax and such!

I think you would just have to call each reseller and ask if they are selling old/new stock.

Or you can pay Apple $9.95 for the DVD under the Up-to-Date Program.

Or you can wait for the revised iBooks which are already overdue (based on the average time between previous upgrades). Remember, the current iBooks only have 32MB of video RAM and so can't fully support Tiger.

Can't support Tiger? Is this true? Does the powerbook 12 inch support tiger?

It does support Tiger just fine, it just doesn't take advantage of all the eye candy. but to tell u the truth, the only thing I notice is no ripple on the dashboard.

I think it's an overstatement to say Tiger isn't fully supported on the iBook. It is. It's just that it doesn't have enough VRAM to support Core Image, a useful feature that the vast majority of users will never even notice is missing.

yea what selowitch said. It works perfectly fine on an iBook (I have one running it right now, and this message is being typed on it). The only thing you wont see at this point is the ripple effect in CoreImage due to the 32mb VRAM.

If I were you, I'd just ask the resellers if they would ship you a copy, or knock $9.99 +s&h off the price so you could get your copy of tiger via apple's up to date program.

If you know any students, have them buy a new one with the educational discount, throw them an extra $100 or so over the cost of it to cover expenses and you've still saved yourself a few dollars.

Is that ethical?

Sure, I bought my Quadra 610 when I was a graduate student. But I don't think that entitles me to purchase an iBook today with a educational discount. After all, Apple counts on the additional revenue from "business" customers like myself to continue to fund efforts like improvements to Mac OS X, etc.

One could reasonably argue that if the student who is purchasing the iBook for you is sticking to the annual limit (is it two machines per year?), then it may be ethically okay. I'm not so sure; I think this is a gray area.

I agree.. just saying its the equivalent of a white lie.

Every mac product I have purchased after I graduated has been full price, and despite the hit to the wallet, I haven't minded.

A person can purchase one desktop and one portable Mac per year using the education discount.
