Hi,

I am brand new user of Mac. Now, yesterday I bought a brand new Apple IBook G4 from Apple store. I tried running DVD and a music CD. They ran fine, but the only problem is the cd won't eject by pressing the eject button on the keypad. It also would not eject by any other way accept if I go in I-tunes and press eject which is on the itune window the cd would eject.

Is there any problem with the keypad eject button or is there any setting i should try so it does not happen again ? I really do not know much about the settings...

any help is appreciated.

P.S. I aksed couple of friends who use the same machine and they told me that when you push the eject button a triangular symbol comes up in the screen and ejects the CD. nothing happnes in my machine, though it gives some sound (ding ding) when i press the eject button for like 5 sec or so.

Plz help !!

Also try dragging the CD to the trash.

On my machine, the keyboard button seems more likely to work if the cd isn't in use.

Is there anything stuck to the cd like a big fat label or anything? This can make it stick for sure.

Try pressing AND HOLDING the F12 key for eject. I think if you just tap it's the F12 key and if you press and hold it's the eject key. I've always pressed and held the key on my TiBook.

Also: if you drag the disc to the trash in the dock the trash can icon turns into an eject symbol...a nicity Apple added in OS X to make users not as panicky about the metaphor of throwing a CD into a trash can.

You can also reboot the machine while holding down your trackpad button until the disc ejects but that's for when the steps above fail.

The F12 key only works if the keyboard does not have an Eject key.

If you cannot eject the CD by any of the means suggested do not try prying it out; call AppleCare instead. If there is evidence of tampering with the optical drive Apple will not honor the warranty.

Does the drive make sounds like it is trying to eject the CD but nothing happens? If so, it probably is a bad drive.

After four months of use my G4 iBook's optical drive swallowed a CD and wouldn't cough it up. It had to go back to Apple for a replacement drive. Hopefully your iBook doesn't have a bad drive...

Oh yeah...I forgot about that. The full-size Apple keyboard that my Dad has for his Mac mini has a dedicated eject key...and all he has to do is tap it to eject a disc.

On the PowerMac G4 I just tap the eject key to eject Cds & DVDs, but on my brother's iBook G4, you have to press the F12/Eject key until you see the eject symbol picture on the iBook G4's screen and then you could let go of the F12/eject key and the CD/DVD should pop out.

My memory may be faulty, but if you turned on your Function Keys (i.e. F1-F12) from System Prefs>Keyboard & Mouse, you got to press the "fn" key while pressing the "eject" key until you see the eject symbol picture on the iBook G4's screen and then you could let go and the CD or DVD would eject from its drive.

Was the CD playing when you tried to eject it? If memory serves me right, you can't use the eject button on a disc that is in use by another program. (You'd be grateful for that if you were burning, ripping, installing, etc. and you or a cat hit the eject key by accident!)

Yeah, try what the others said.

If that don't work, here's two more methods:

(1) Hold down the mouse button on an external mouse, while booting up. The CD should eject.

If that don't work, this usually does:

1. Boot your Mac while holding <Command + Option + O + F> - (You'll be booting into open firmware)

2. Type eject cd

3. Type mac-boot

4. That's it, your Mac will now continue to boot.

PacHead's last suggestion is what I could not remember when I last posted... That is the Option of Last Resort. If it doesn't come out, then it truly is stuck. If you wind up calling AppleCare the tech support person will have you try booting into open firmware, then he/she will arrange for shipment if the CD remains inside your iBook.

Good luck!

does the volume go up and down by just pressing the fX and fY key?

If not try pressing fn (bottom left) and the appropriate fZ key.

i.e. press fn + f12

This is a preference to have the f-keys work with or without fn
