My iBook G4 drive (30GB) has sadly failed, and no amount of DiskWarrior/Drive10/Norton/Disk Utility/UNIX utilities seems to be reviving it. I'd like to send it to a drive recovery service, but Drive Savers wants more than it would cost me to buy a brand-new PowerBook, and there are a ton of other companies that appear to have varying degrees of shadiness. Anyone know of a good service that can recover a relatively small (~1-2GB) of files without causing me to take out a second mortgage? Any advice is more than welcome. Thanks.

This may not help you, but when I tried to recover my hard drive after the thieves wiped it, my local apple store gave me a list of "prefered" data recovery services. I never looked into using them. I tried Data Rescue X with mixed results. You need an external storage device for this software.

Actually, that helps a lot. It never occurred to me to contact our Apple rep. And external storage is no issue as it's summer and all my student machines are heaped in my office just looking for something to do. Thanks! I'll give both options a shot.

WTF, jbartlet ?

You have posted the same question in 4 different forums, and didn't even bother to do a search.
There are tons of threads out there giving advice on this very issue. ANd you better get aquainted with the forum rules here !

Actually, it's two forums, and I did an extensive search. I'm asking specifically for company recommendations and/or referrals. Thank you for your response anyway.

If the hard drive is not being seen I suggest OnTrack Data Recovery in Irvine CA. They do a great job and are not shady at all. I refer clients to them all the time they charge about $500 a hour. If your hard drive is being detected then you may want to try using Easy Recovery Professional. It is a Windows based program but it works wonders. I have been able to recover data that has been wiped out by a low level format. I've also recovered from drives with bad sectors. Good luck!

You can send me your iBook and I'll try to recover it!!!

Just kidding. Have you tried using Target Disk Mode and mounting the drive for repair from another mac? Just a word of warning, in cases such as this an attempt at recovery that fails may actually prevent another future method of correcting whatever went wrong.

I suggest mounting it if possible and using DiskCopy util from Apple to do a disk image onto another drive. THEN try and do repairs on the disk image first.

Good luck.
