hi folks,

i'm in my third year with a seriously challenged 15" dvi TiPb that got dropped hard on the back corner.

http://web.tiscali.it/ramaloka (sorry, not viewable using safari!)

after replacing the hinges and the ccfl tube in the screen i was up and running until recently a recurring problem with horizontal screen flashes became worse and all went black.

some weeks ago the light of the lcd screen has refused to come on and there is no image being displayed on the screen itself (which i have backlit by shining a light through it from the back - the top panel is removed of course).

i thought that the inverter or its cable might have gone, so i have replaced it with another from an ebay auction, but no luck with that. i'm running out of ideas here.

anyone??????

as there is neither light nor information coming to the screen i imagine it could be a 'deeper' issue, but i have no clue what.

perhaps a recent change to the last os 10.x.x update before tiger? not likely.

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ram

p.s.: just remembered - the screen turned very dark after startup in the last few weeks before failing, it seemed like an incorrect gamma/light/contrast setting to me, but i could not adjust it in the display preferences.

Usually, if there are horizontal screen flashes, I'd say something with the LCD itself or the LVDS cable would be at work. Unfortunately, if you're getting zero backlight or image, I'd say either you did a bad job of installing those extra parts, or the MLB is toast. I'm betting on the MLB, but I've been wrong before.

Have you tried running the hardware test disc yet? If not, try that.

As bighead noted, I'm not sure how well you installed the parts...so is it possible that you could have crimped (or inappropriately placed so they would crimp) the display cables?

i think i did the exact same thing to a powerbook. its because i pinched teh crap out of the power cable to the monitor when i was putting the hinges back. i got it fixed under warranty for some reason. complete replacement of the lcd for free, worked out great. i hope that helps somewhat cause i dont know if youll share my luck.

thanks for your replies!

incredible, but true, i'm now writing to you all on my pb that gave me such problems.

alas i don't really know why it has decided to come back and it does still have the contrast/gamma problem (screen darkening) that happens only after the login, so it's some kind of software issue i guess (color synch?).

the crimped cable is a distinct possibility, in fact i'll work on that next as the two (gray & black) wires that run to the ccfl lamp often slip between the hinge and the lcd frame as i did not place the cover back on the screen. i'll think of replacing the whole length, but in truth, the machine did always power on but then had no image on screen that i could see when i backlight the screen artificially(when the backlight was actually broken i could always see the sign-on screen etc.).

BIGHEAD>>>what is the MLB, mother logic board?

BIMMERPHILE>>>Have you tried running the hardware test disc yet?
--- i don't have any such disc, i got this machine from the person who had it damaged by lufthansa sending it in an unpaded fedexBOX. any way to get such a disc?

OPERAMAN>>>complete replacement of the lcd for free, worked out great. i hope that helps somewhat cause i dont know if youll share my luck.
---i already feel lucky enough to have this machine for free to fool around with, can't really expect mother apple to give me free stuff on top of this.

should i get tiger on this pb or will it mean more problems?
