Just installed a new hard drive on my AL 15" PowerBook.
In a previous post I explained that my hard drive was failing.
I purchased a FUJI 5400 MHT2080AH.
Replacing the hard drive seemed to be a success.
I just booted, with the Tiger disk in the drive.
The install screen came up.
Once I agreed to Apple's terms, I got to the 'select destination...' portion of the install.
My hard drive is not an option.
I was able to get into System Profiler and Disk Utility from this screen.
Here, my new hard drive is listed.
So, the computer can see that it is there and the SMART status is Verified.
Why can't I see the hard drive to install OS X???

You need to format the hard drive.
You can do that in Disk Utility.
It should be formatted to Mac OS Extended with journaling on.
Try formatting and see if the hard drive now shows up in the installer.
Just because the disk shows up in Disk Utility doesn't mean that it has been formatted.

ibook_steve is right.

i had the exact same thing as you. swopped my powerbook hard drive and then got a shock when the tiger install did not see it. disk utility (in tiger install) can format it for you.
