I just ordered an ibook g4 800 256 mb ram w/ combo drive (gotta love refurbs for $649). Is this enough ram for tiger? If not should I upgrade to 640 or 384, I am pretty broke right now and hope 256 will do the job. Thanks in advance.

If you can starve for like 1 week and get an additional 256 you would be fine (512 total).. if you push it to the next level of starving for 2-3 weeks get the 512 chip and enjoy your iBook much better performance.
I would definetly skip the 384 level of ram...been there and there isn't any noticeable performance difference between 256 and 384. Go for 512 or 768.
regards

Wait and get the 512 stick once you can afford it.
It helps especially if yo want to do RAM intensive apps or run many apps at a time.
For fast user switching, you DEFINITELY would need the 512.

256/384Mb is not enough. Get a 512Mb stick to upgrade to 640.

I believe he's got 256 base.. so a 512 would get him to a 768 total.

I would say 768 is enough ram, but then again my Ibook 12" 1.2ghz 768mb has a lot of beachballs popping up.
I've got a 1g stick in the post and am hoping it will improve.
Judging from my experience so far, i'd say put as much in as possible.

No. The iBook G4 800 has 128 +128, so you lose 128 if you upgrade the memory. 128 + 512 = 640.

My iBook 1.07ghz is too underpowered with 512mb total. I find that Quicktime 7 (in Panther) is really sluggish. For instance if I'm watching a 700mb AVI file and try and skip to a different spot in the film there is quite a delay (spinning beach balls) and it takes a moment for the video and sound the synch up and get up to speed, and it drops a few frames for the first few seconds of play.
I guess I'll have to save up for a 1gb chip.

I have a 12" G4 1.2 with 256 of ram and since upgrading to tiger im having serious performance issues. the spinning disk is always coming up on safari and mail so ive opted for a ram upgrade. I think apple stating a min 256 ram should be changed
