I recently received my new Powerbook, and when I play back video, I get small, dotted vertical lines running throughout it. It doesn't always happen, but sometimes it does. Does anyone know what this is and whether it is a hardware problem (i.e. loose cables in LCD) or some driver problem? I'd take a screenshot if I knew how to (what's the mac "print screen" shortcut?).

Unfortunately, that could be your graphics chip since the distortion shows up when you do a screen grab, meaning that the video that the GPU is producing is messed and not just a problem with the video cable or LCD. Does this happen only in Quicktime movies or do you see it anywhere else?

Well, it doesn't happen in non-video apps like iTunes, finder, the desktop, etc. It does happen with different video codecs though. Some .movs will do it it, while others won't; some .mpgs will do it while others won't.

I ran the Apple hardware test that is supplied on the install disk, and it said that everything is fine.

I *think* it might be bad video ram.. a friends had a similar thing, (but worse in fact), that means a whole new logic board.
