Depends on what programs you want to run. But one tip: if you run a lot of 'em at once, max out the RAM.

I'm using a TiBook g4 667 with 800 some k of ram as my main computer - I also run a million apps at a time including photoshop, illustrator, indesign, firefox. I think it's fine, personally. I recently got an external monitor and keyboard and somehow that give the illusion of more speed, probably because you can actually _do_ more things simultaneously.

You can get memory later, try dealram.com for quality ram at good price. Superdrive can be pretty expensive to do internally mcetech.com will do it for around $300, but you could get a faster external dual layer burner for prob. under $150. As far as speed, if you get the ram, it will be tolerable. I run a 1 ghz ibook w/768 ram as a main computer pretty often, with photoshop/indesign/dreamweaver/firefox/ichat and a couple random apps running with no problems except the occasional spinning wheel.

eMac 800 Mhz Radeon - 640 Mb - 40 Gb
iBook 1.07 Ghz Radeon - 768 Mb - 30 Gb

The machine is plenty fast enough for multi-tasking (with enough RAM) but on a 12" ibook, it's screen real estate you'll be lacking...

I bougth the 12", and an additional external dvd burner.
The burner wasn't expensive and has dual layer capability, But it isn't very portable.
But i will not burn much dvd's anywhere else than from home (mostly for home videos etc)

If you were to buy ram for your ibook i would go to www.crucial.com

They give you the perfect ram for the model of your ibook for a very low price. You can get an additional 256mb ram for about $30

Yeah, but that will hardly be enough if he wants to do PS and have a lot of other apps runing at the same time...

print screen is usually called screen capture on mac.....

apple-shift-3 for the whole screen

apple-shift-4 to select an area

those actions will both produce a file on the desktop called picture 1, 2, 3, etc.

open those up and print from the file
...

as far as the external hd, as long as it is usb, usb2, or firewire, you should have no prob. using it with your ibook

It should. But you can not boot from USB2, only from FW.

If it's your only computer, I'd also recommend getting AppleCare, and eventually adding a larger external display and keyboard -- your eyes and back and wrists will thank you.

Any suggestions of display+keyboard/mouse that won't be cruel to the wallet, but still good?

i have the same mouse as you for 3 years now, it is 1) indestructible, and 2) farqing wonderful. MS makes fantastic mice, i'll give them that much.

just received my new 12" iBook this morning. stock model + 512mb stick, as i posted earlier. the thing is a dream. zippy and responsive. since indexing my 160gb firewire drive i haven't gotten a single beachball. running itunes, safari, word, excel, mail.app, riding the torrents at 350kb down plus a host of minor applications running in the background... not a stutter.

you can wait a year to get applecare, the 1-year warranty has you covered till then... and as mentioned, USB is fine for the ibook.

Thanks gents.
Let me add that if you get a 12" with a 30gb hard disk you may want to customreinstall Tiger before loading a single thing onto the internal drive. The factory install ate up like 8 or 9 gig of disk space with at least a gigabyte of printer drivers, 4 or 500mg of language translations and 1.5gb of World Book Encyclopaedia garbage and other tripe. Something like 8 or 9gb, I'm not sure, but it was A LOT.

Wow, that IS a lot. They really jam-packed that dvd, and it looks to me that they just installed everything from it onto the drive. Have fun with your new computer.
